In John 11:25-26, Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” This statement, made before raising Lazarus from the dead, is one of the most powerful declarations of Christ’s identity and mission.
Jesus speaks these words to Martha, who is grieving the loss of her brother Lazarus. She believes in a future resurrection at the end of time but does not yet grasp that Jesus Himself is the source of resurrection and eternal life. By performing the miracle of raising Lazarus, Jesus demonstrates that His authority over death is not just for the future but for the present.
